Jason Emsley
One of the single most defining aspects of the house/techno scene is without
question: the fan base. There aren't many other musical movements that can claim
such a diehard audience that stays true to the music as the sound transforms
over the years.
This dedication is exhibited through numerous channels, one of the most
important being the unassuming atmosphere. Another invaluable facet is audience
participation. Large portions of the crowd at an event are generally involved in
the structure of the scene themselves, whether it is as a dj, producer,
promoter, etc...
Jason shares a similar experience to many other dj/producers in that he is a fan
first and foremost. The music he grew up listening to all shared one main theme;
they pushed the boundaries of their contemporaries. His taste ranged widely from
Pink Floyd to Radiohead. Further, Jason idolized Frank Zappa's creative insanity
and Jimi Hendrix's musical genius. His immersion into electronic music began
around the age of 15 through some friends that were active in San Diego,
California's underground scene. Initially they introduced him to well-known
electronica such as: The Prodigy, Crystal Method, and The Chemical Brothers.
Shortly afterwards, Jason was given an old Doc Martin live mix, became instantly
hooked, and from there actively began actively searching out new sounds.
While attending the University of Colorado in Boulder, Jason picked up a pair of
Technics, and began playing out as much as possible. Almost immediately, Jason
realized the creative limitations of turntables and took necessary initial steps
into production. Thus, after graduating from Boulder, he made a strategic move
to London in order to further his studies in audio engineering. While living in
London, Jason regularly sought out inspiration at the now legendary club,
Fabric. On the venue he commented in saying, "By far and away the best club I've
ever been to. You can't possibly fathom the music policy of that place until you
experience it. They are without question paving the road to where electronic
music is heading".
Packing and uprooting ultimately paid off. Jason's minimally-geared version of
Chuck Lepley's "Lowlight Passion" reached #7 on Beatport's progressive chart in
the first week of the release. Currently, he has a track licensed to a V.A. due
out in February of the New Year on French label: Telegraph. Additionally, look
out for other releases, including an e.p. on German label: Platzhirsch scheduled
for release early in the New Year.
Jason is now living in Los Angeles while pursuing a dream that is finally within
reach. With sets put together using the same fine-tooth comb as on the tracks he
pours his all into, Jason is no doubt one to watch grow into his own.
.......Tobias Becker ist Techno-DJ und Produzent aus Duisburg. Weit bekannter
als er selbst sind allerdings seine beiden Labels Platzhirsch Schallplatten und
Kahlwild, die sich seit ihrer Gründung 2003 und 2005 immer wieder durch gute
Releases hervortun. Zu den Artists, die dort veröffentlicht haben, gehören unter
anderem Gabriel Ananda, Graziano Avitabile, Rocco Branco alias Dominik Eulberg
und Jason Emsley. Der Labelchef selbst releast erst 2007 seinen ersten Track auf
dem eigenen Imprint.
